The Gambia Press Union (GPU) is pleased to invite suitably qualified candidates to apply for the vacant position of Programme Assistant.
Background of GPU:
The GPU
is the umbrella body for Gambian journalists, registered with the Attorney General’s
Office in 1979. The Union’s mission is
to promote press freedom and media professionalism as well as promote and
protect the welfare and safety of media practitioners.
Key Responsibilities:
The
Programme Assistant directly works with the Programme Team in the design and implementation
of project and programme activities as well as providing general administrative
and logistical support.
Other key duties
include:
Ø Provide
programme and administrative support to the programme team in the preparation
of various programme documents, such as work plans, budgets, reports and
proposals on programme implementation arrangements;
Ø Provide
administrative support to the programme team in the organization of events,
meetings and workshops, etc;
Ø Maintain
and organize up-to-date hard and electronic files for easy access and
retrieval, and ensure safekeeping of confidential materials;
Ø Take
minutes of regular team meetings and other meetings;
Ø Write
news and social media posts for GPU website and social media handles to communicates
the Union’s activities;
Ø Other
duties as assigned by the programme team.
Education and Experience:
ü At least Advanced Diploma in Journalism, Communication, Political Science,
Development Studies, Law or any other relevant social sciences;
ü Minimum of four (4) years of professional work experience in the media,
donor fundraising, project management, development work or civil society
engagement in The Gambia;
ü Demonstrable knowledge and understanding of Gambia media landscape,
especially media laws, regulations and issues of journalists’ welfare is an
added advantage.

ü
Ability to perform a broad range
of specialised activities aimed at effective and efficient functioning of the
programme team, including logistical support;
ü
Ability to write news stories and
social media post clearly
ü
Ability to organise and complete
multiple tasks by establishing priorities
ü
Ability to handle a large volume
of work, also under time constraints
ü
Ability to manage data,
documents, correspondence and reports information and workflow
ü Ability to work in a demanding environment and meet deadlines
ü Good IT skills, especially MS Office applications
Reporting line: Programme Assistant reports
to the Programme Team.
