The
Gambia Press Union (GPU) is pleased to invite suitably qualified candidates to
apply for the vacant position of Programme
Manager.
Background of GPU:
The GPU
is the umbrella body for Gambian journalists, registered with the Attorney General’s
Office in 1979. The Union’s mission is
to promote press freedom and media professionalism as well as promote and
protect the welfare and safety of media practitioners.
Key Responsibilities:
The
Programme Manager is responsible for leading the conceptualisation, design and
implementation of projects and programmes in furtherance of the mandate,
mission and vision of GPU.
Other
key duties include:
Ø Responsible for the day-to-day operation of the program department
Ø Work with the Secretary General of the GPU to fulfil the Union’s
mandates and mission,
Ø Work closely with the Secretary General in policy formulation, resource
mobilisation and key decisions and undertakings of the Union,
Ø Work with the Secretary General in the development,
implementation, monitoring and evaluation of the Union’s programmatic,
financial and institutional plans
Ø Together with the Secretary, lead the resource mobilisation efforts
of the Union,
Ø Initiate
and maintain high level contacts or relations with local and international
media organisations and human rights bodies or institutions
Ø Enhance communication between the GPU and its partners, donor
community and other stakeholders
Ø Ensure transparent, effective and efficient management of the
Union’s funds, particularly project funds
Ø Other duties as assigned by the Secretary General
Education and Experience:
ü Bachelor’s Degree in Journalism, Communication, Political Science,
Development Studies, Law or any other relevant social sciences,
ü Minimum of five (5) years professional work experience in the media,
or donor fundraising, project management, development work or civil society
engagement in The Gambia.
Skills:
ü Strong leadership and strategic management skills
ü Demonstrable experience, knowledge and understanding of Gambia
media landscape, especially media laws, regulations and issues of journalists’
welfare,
ü Experience in media advocacy and development initiatives
ü High level strategic thinking and planning.
ü Ability to envision and convey the GPU’s strategic future to the
staff, board, volunteers and donors,
ü Demonstrated ability to oversee and collaborate with staff,
ü A history of successfully generating new revenue streams and
improving financial results,
ü Excellent donor relations skills and understanding of the funding
community,
ü Solid organizational abilities, including planning, delegating,
program development and task facilitation,
ü Good financial management skills, including budget preparation,
analysis, decision making and reporting,
ü Strong written and oral communication skills,
ü Strong work ethics.
ü Excellent networking skills and ability to collaborate with
partners and stakeholders
ü Ability to work in a demanding environment and meet deadlines
ü Good IT skills, especially in MS Office applications
Reporting line: The Programme Manager reports
to the Secretary General.
