The Gambia Press Union (GPU) on the 29th October 2021 elected a new board at its triennial congress held at the Paradise Suites Hotel.
Former GPU Vice President, Muhammed M.S. Bah, was elected as the new President after winning thirty-six out of the seventy-three votes.
Bah succeeds Sheriff Bojang Jnr, who served as President of the GPU from September 2018 to October 2021.
The other candidates who contested for the position of President were Freelance Journalist, Omar Wally, who received twenty-eight votes, and Mustapha Ceesay, Editor-In-Chief of Kerr Fatou, who received nine votes.
In his acceptance speech, the president-elect Mr. Bah expressed his gratitude for being honored with the position of President of the GPU.
“I want to thank you all for your incredible work which you’ve done during testing times,” he said of the outgoing board. “I will do my best to build on your legacy by striving to meet the demands of our members.”
Bah said that this is a new era in Gambian media, and that “expectations are understandably high”. He said the members of the GPU should hold him and his board as “works starts today”.
This new GPU executive board includes Vice President Isatou Keita of GRTS who was elected unopposed. Other persons elected unopposed were Freelance Journalist Sally Jeng as Treasurer; Paul Steven Prierra of Star FM as Ordinary Member; Yusupha Bojang of the Network of Community Radios as Ordinary Member; Alieu Ceesay of QTV as Ordinary Member, Momodou Jawo of The Point Newspaper as Ordinary Member; and Maimuna Baldeh of Bansang Community Radio as Ordinary Member.
