GPU Advocacy Training

Jul 17, 2020

The Gambia Press Union the advocate for journalists over the last months embarked on a series of training. Board members and staff on the 17th and 18th July were trained on advocacy.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the 2-day training Sheriff Bojang Jnr said he hope that the training will equip and build the capacity of the Unions staff and members of the board.

“This is an outcome of a policy and plan drafted by GPU at the beginning of the year to empower the institution through the personnel, the people that work there for more effective and better service delivery.” he said.

He added that he hoped at the end of the training everybody will learn and plan things that will help boost the Union’s programs and projects.

The training came at a time that the Union’s Access To Information bill is being tabled at the National Assembly and if passed more advocacy will be done to sensitize the public on its importance and benefits.

Sarjo S Camara head of Gender and Welfare Committee gave the closing remarks and highlighted the importance and timeliness of the advocacy training

“This couldn’t have come at a better time when we are faced with so many challenges that to be able to continue our fight we need new approaches to our advocacy. And having Commissioner Njundu Drammeh as the trainer who has faced similar challenges has given us the confidence boost we needed to pick up the fights that for so long was left to the secretariat alone.”

She also thanked the secretariat for including the board in all its activities and being transparent.
